Anthony Hopkins Reflects on Sobriety and a Life-Changing Moment

Oscar-winning actor #AnthonyHopkins has opened up about a pivotal moment in his life when he realized his addiction to alcohol could have killed him—or someone else.

During the October 25 episode of The Interview podcast by The New York Times, the 87-year-old actor discussed his upcoming memoir We Were Fine, Boy, recalling the night that changed everything.

“I was drunk, driving through California, completely out of it, not knowing where I was going,” Hopkins said. “I suddenly realized I could have killed someone—or myself. That’s when I came to my senses and told a former agent at a Beverly Hills party: I need help.”

Hopkins described a profound turning point that same evening: “At exactly eleven o’clock, I heard a deep inner voice say: ‘It’s over. Now you can start your life.’” He compared the voice to a calm, masculine radio announcer and said it instantly erased his desire to drink.

The actor, who has been sober for decades, reflected on gratitude: “I have no theories except divinity, or that inner power we all possess. Losing the urge to drink was a gift. Today, I wake up every morning close to 88 years old and say: I’m still here. How? Thank you—that’s all I know.”

Hopkins also spoke about his difficult childhood, admitting he once turned to alcohol to numb loneliness and stress. “Drinking makes you feel like you’re in a different place instantly. Everyone I worked with is gone, but I’m still here, and I feel nothing but gratitude.”

Hopkins’ candid reflections add a deeply personal dimension to his legendary Hollywood career, reminding fans of his resilience and ability to transform adversity into wisdom.
